The summer before my sophomore year of college, my mom dug
through her college “Crock Pot Cookbook” and dozens of crumpled recipes to
prepare me for my first year of cooking on my own. Luckily for girls (and moms) now, we have a
wonderful tool: Pinterest.
Almost every girl has a “dream wedding” board and another
with fashion-forward looks they’ll most likely never follow through with. For me, that was my “meals to try” board.
Inspired by my social media savvy fellow interns I worked
with while abroad in Spain, I decided to get organized. Instead of having a general food category on
my profile, I learned it’s easier to manage recipes when they’re separated into
subgroups. For example, recipes I need
to try are divided into “party dips and snacks”, “light dining”, and “guiltless
snacks”. Once a recipe has passed the
test, I “re-pin” it to “crowd pleasers”.
My girlfriends and I, eager for quick healthy meals and
great company, decided to have a “Pinterest Potluck” to celebrate returning to
school. It was a huge success, and I
can’t wait for our next one.
Of course, over my now-famous jalapeno popper dip (with substituted low
fat cream cheese, mayo and cheese), we gossiped about our other boards and promised to finally accomplish a few DIY projects together. One of the top to-dos on our list is cut-up
tees with intricate back designs for future football games-we’re definitely
going to need to stay on the lighter side of snacking to sport those!
Eating healthy through college is often a challenge, but
it’s much easier with friends to help along the way; a fun-to-use, organized
online recipe box doesn’t hurt either.
My mom just got her first iPhone a few months ago and is
almost ready to create a Facebook profile. Now that she's slowly moving into the age of technology, I can’t wait to help her finally hop on the Pinterest train- any suggestions for recipes or DIY projects perfect for mother/ daughter bonding?
